There are so many fonts to choose from, it can be a real minefield to know where to start. I thought I'd explain a few design terms to do with typography and font to give you a little more information about the different families of fonts. I hope this is helpful!
Typography:
Typography is the arrangement of type. It's so important in many aspects of graphic design, not only do the words need to be legible, they also need to work within the layout of the design and work to portray the ethos and feelings behind the brand the design is for.
Typography is full of design jargon, including names for the different parts of the letterforms, different groups or families of typefaces (fonts), and how the words are arranged and used within a design.
Serif fonts:
A serif is the small line or stroke attached to the ends of a letter or symbol. Serif fonts always include these little lines/strokes. They are viewed as formal or classic and often have an elegant feel to them.
Serif fonts are easy to read at a small size and are often used for the text in books or documents. However, they can display poorly at a small size on screen so Sans-Serif fonts are usually used on websites etc.
Examples of Serif fonts are; Times New Roman, Bodoni, Baskerville, Georgia & Garamond.
Sans Serif fonts:
Sans Serif fonts are viewed as modern and bold, they have a stylish and minimalistic feel to them because of their simplicity.
They’re often used for large, bold titles in printed materials, and are the predominant font type used on websites and anything viewed digitally as they’re clearer to read on-screen than Serif fonts.
Examples of Sans Serif fonts are: Helvetica, Verdana, Arial, Futura, Gill Sans.
Script fonts:
Script fonts are designed to look more like handwriting/cursive or in some cases, calligraphy. They are fluid and often decorative, but vary hugely. They are generally used for headings, within logos, or single sentences of information rather than bodies of text as this would be harder to read than a standard serif or sans serif font.
Examples of Script fonts are: Grafolita, Adorn Pomander, Bickham Script, Indie Flower, Lust Script.
